The United States has introduced expanded screening measures for H-1B work visas and their dependent H-4 visas, leading to longer processing times and new requirements for applicants around the world. The updated procedures took effect in mid-December and are already reshaping the global visa application landscape.
Under the new policy, U.S. consulates and embassies are conducting more detailed reviews of each applicant’s online presence, which includes social media and other publicly accessible digital profiles. Authorities say the enhanced vetting is part of an effort to ensure the integrity of the visa system while still allowing employers to hire foreign talent.
The expanded screening went into effect on December 15, 2025, and covers applicants of all nationalities seeking H-1B and H-4 nonimmigrant visas. Applicants are being advised to submit their applications early and to prepare for extended processing times, as consular officers now spend additional time evaluating digital footprints as part of standard background checks.
Several U.S. embassies have also rescheduled or postponed visa interview appointments that were originally booked after mid-December. Many applicants reported that interviews have been pushed into early 2026, with some experiencing delays of several months as a result of the new vetting requirements.
In response to these developments, some multinational companies that employ a large number of skilled foreign workers have cautioned their H-1B and H-4 visa staff to avoid international travel for the time being. Internal advisories from employers have highlighted the risk of being unable to secure timely visa stamping appointments, which could prevent returning to the United States once abroad.
Officials have emphasized that U.S. embassies and consulates continue to accept and process H-1B and H-4 visa applications, but applicants should expect longer wait times and additional scrutiny. The expanded screening and review of online activity are part of a broader trend toward more rigorous evaluations of visa applicants globally.
